Privacy Policy
SafeRoute is a school bus tracking service. It shows parents and guardians where their child's bus is, tells them when their child boards and is dropped off, and gives schools and drivers the tools to run each route safely. This policy explains what information the SafeRoute mobile app, the school console and this website handle, why, and the choices you have.
The short version
- Location comes only from the driver's phone during a trip. We never collect a parent's or child's own location.
- Information is used to keep children safe on the school journey. It is never sold, never used for advertising, and never used to profile anyone.
- GPS history is deleted after 90 days and driver shift photos after 30 days.
- You can delete your account from the app at any time.
Information we collect
Parents and guardians: your name, email address and phone number; your children's names, school, grade and section; the bus stops your children use; your notification preferences; and a record of when you accepted this policy.
Children: the details your school or you provide — name, school, grade, section, roll number, assigned stops, and optionally a photo and medical or allergy notes the school records for safety. We also record trip events such as boarding, drop-off and absences. Children do not use the app themselves.
Drivers: name, phone, email, licence number and expiry; the bus's location while a trip is in progress, including when the app is in the background or the screen is off (tracking stops when the trip ends or the driver signs out); and one photo at the start of each shift so the school can confirm who drove the bus.
School staff: name, username and contact details, and actions taken in the console.
Technical information: a push notification token so we can send alerts to your device, the device name you sign in from, IP addresses and timestamps in security and audit logs, and error reports when the app crashes.
How we use it
- To show the live bus location and estimated arrival time to the school and to parents of children on that bus.
- To notify parents when their child boards, is dropped off, or when there is a delay or emergency.
- To alert school administrators immediately when a driver or parent raises an SOS.
- To let schools manage buses, routes, rosters and drivers, and to keep a record of each trip.
- To sign you in, keep accounts secure, investigate misuse, and fix problems.
Who we share it with
Your school can see the information for its own students, parents, drivers and trips. A parent sees only their own children. We do not sell or rent personal information. We share it only with:
- Service providers that run parts of SafeRoute for us, under contract and only for that purpose: Amazon Web Services (hosting), Expo, Apple and Google (push notifications), Twilio (text messages), Twilio SendGrid (email), Google (Google Sign-In and address search), OpenStreetMap services (maps and routing), and Sentry (crash reports).
- Authorities, when the law requires it or when it is needed to protect a child's safety.
Where it is stored
SafeRoute's servers are hosted by Amazon Web Services in the United States. Some service providers above may process information in other countries. Wherever it is processed, it is protected as this policy describes.
How long we keep it
- Detailed GPS points: deleted automatically after 90 days.
- Driver shift photos: deleted automatically after 30 days, or immediately when the driver's account is erased.
- Account information: kept while the account is active. When you delete your account, your profile and your children's profiles are anonymised; trip records are kept for the school's safety records but no longer carry names.
- Backups: kept for 14 days, then deleted.
Your choices and rights
- Access and correction: you can view and edit your profile in the app, or ask us or your school for a copy of your information.
- Deletion: use Delete my account in the app's profile screen, or contact us.
- Consent: parents give consent before their child's travel data is processed, and can withdraw it by contacting us or the school. Without it, we cannot show that child's bus.
- Notifications and location: you can turn off notifications, and drivers can turn off location, in the phone's settings — some features will stop working.
Depending on where you live, privacy laws such as India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and Canada's PIPEDA may give you further rights, including the right to complain to a regulator. To exercise any right, or to raise a grievance, contact us using the details below and we will respond within 30 days.
How we protect it
All connections are encrypted with HTTPS. Passwords are stored only as secure hashes. Each school can see only its own data, staff actions are logged, and access to the servers is restricted to authorised operators.
Children
SafeRoute processes children's information only to keep them safe on the school journey, only as provided by their school or guardian, and only with a parent or guardian's consent. Children do not create accounts or use the app.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the version and date above. If a change affects how we use information already collected, we will ask for consent again in the app.
